Birds are animals but the list of threatened New Zealand birds has been separated from the
'Threatened! Animals' page because New Zealand has a lot of native birds in danger of
becoming extinct.
*Without the
threat of lots of predators, many native birds nested on the ground and became flightless.
When people and introduced predators arrived, these species were easy to catch*
The Department of Conservation scientists decide which New Zealand bird species need the
most help. They have a list of the most threatened species. The list is divided into three
groups, A, B and C. The birds listed in the A group are the most threatened.
The list was put
together by the Department of Conservation in 1992.
The list has their
scientific name and their common name.
