Threatened Animals

Threatened! | Birds | Plants | Glossary | Resources

*New Zealand has some ancient native animals which have no defences against introduced predators*
For example the giant weta, giant land snails and the tuatara.

Birds are animals but the list of threatened New Zealand birds has been separated from the 'Threatened! Animals' page because New Zealand has a lot of native birds in danger of becoming extinct. See the list on the Threatened! Birds page.

The weta is a threatened species

The Department of Conservation scientists decide which New Zealand animal species need the most help. They have a list of the most threatened species. The list is divided into three groups, A, B and C. The animals listed in the ‘A’ group are the most threatened.

The list was put together by the Department of Conservation in 1992.

The list has their scientific name and their common name (some species do not have a common name).
