The Mahoenui Giant Weta is a species of Giant Weta and it has found a good habitat. By
living in gorse the weta is protected from enemies. Gorse is a spiky weed that farmers
usually spray and burn to get rid of, but one special patch in the King Country is now
protected because that is where the Mahoenui giant weta is hiding.

The weta sheds its exoskeleton when moulting. When you grow bigger, you get bigger
clothes. When a weta grows bigger, it breaks out of its old skeleton and grows a new and
bigger one on the outside of its body.

Weta can be found all over the place. Tree weta can be found in peoples back yards,
giant weta live on islands and high up in the mountains and cave weta can be found in
caves of course!

The cave weta can live to be seven years old, all the other weta species usually only live
to be about 2 years old.
