The kiwi is endemic to New Zealand.

2 = a
The kiwi is an amazing bird, but it cannot fly, so it has to run away from enemies.

3 = c
The little spotted is the smallest kiwi. It lives on some of New Zealand’s offshore islands and in the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington.

4 = a
In 1908 the kiwi was given government protection. It is illegal to harm or kill a kiwi.

5 = a
There are 6 varieties of kiwi - North Island Brown, Little Spotted, Great Spotted, Okarito Brown, Haast Tokoeka, Southern Tokoeka.

The great spotted is sometimes known as the ‘mountaineer’ of the kiwi family. It is the biggest kiwi and lives in the northern West Coast, and in the Southern Alps between Arthur’s Pass and Lewis Pass.

Kiwi are territorial, they like to have their own space. Most nights kiwi will walk around their territory, which can be as large as 100 hectares (143 rugby fields).

In 1991 Forest and Bird, the Department of Conservation and the Bank of New Zealand launched the Kiwi Recovery Programme – a big project to learn more about the kiwi and help save the kiwi from extinction. It has its own website www.kiwirecovery.org.nz

9 = d
The Maori name ‘tokoeka’ means ‘weka with a walking stick’. I guess the kiwi’s beak does look a bit like a walking stick for a bird!

10 = b
Kiwi use their sharp claws to defend themselves. But kiwi cannot always defend themselves, dogs and ferrets can kill adult kiwi. Help the kiwi - do not take dogs or ferrets near kiwi habitats.
