Check out Amy's story of how she helped out the weta in her garden

We live in the suburb of Greenlane, Auckland and we have lots of insects around our house. A few years ago this was a problem because a weta was living in a hole in the clothes line where the rope goes in, and it was in danger of being squished.

My dad and I took a small piece of
wood and drilled 4 holes in it, just like
the ones in the clothes line, and attached
it nearby. I painted it brown and green
to blend in with all the trees that mum
has planted on our property.

We forgot all about the weta home until this summer when I peeked into the holes. Something was blocking them up. Very gently we poked a hole with a blunt stick. Out popped a small weta. Three young Wetas had moved in!

Before we set it free I looked at the weta close up – it had surprisingly long
feelers. It must have found its way back because the next morning the three holes were
full again. When it’s dark the weta must go adventuring because the holes are empty at night.

I think this is good way to start saving the world, three weta at a time!
