Tamaki Schools Turn Crimson

Mon, 09 Aug 2010

Thirty four schools in the Auckland-Tamaki region have been given pohutakawa and rata trees, as part of Project Crimson.

The project gives around 13,000 trees to community projects and schools nationwide in an effort to colour our cities and build an appreciation of these native trees.

“This year we grew extra trees, so we asked community groups and schools if they wanted these trees. Ever since I put the call out, I have been inundated with calls,” says Conservation Manager Caroline Wallace

In the past three years Project Crimson has focused on getting schools to plant rata and pohutakawa by running a yearly competition that gives a handful of schools a ‘treemendous makeover’.

The competition is open to intermediate and primary schools. Each year they receive around 150 entries for the competition.
