Puddles on the path to recovery

Puddles on the path to recovery

Puddles, the kiwi chick who was found face-down in a puddle at Trounson Kauri Park in Northland, is still at the Native Bird Recovery Centre in Whangarei thanks to Central Auckland KCC paying for his board.

He is now doing well, and weighs 446gm, compared to the 231gm when he was brought in.
Puddles would have died in the hot sun if he hadn't been rescued.

He was out in the daylight looking for water and food, because of the drought in the forest where he lives.

He will be at the Centre for a little while yet; until the weather changes so that the ground softens to allow him to find enough food with his small beak, and he is big enough to fight off predators like possums and stoats.

Members of F&B (including KCC) are invited to visit the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre during opening hours (weekdays Mon & Fri 1.00pm-4.00pm, and Tues-Thurs 10.00am-4.00pm).

As well as Puddles they have lots of other birds for you to see, including other kiwi chicks which they hatch from eggs and are sent to a pest-free island called Limestone island.
