A Muddy Celebration!

A Muddy Celebration!

The Ashburton KCC celebrated World Wetland day at Russell Langdon's Riverbridge Wetland. The children learned about the Canterbury mudfish and saw juveniles swiming in their stream habitat.

They didn't see adults because adult mudfish are only active at night. Luckily for the KCC members, young mudfish actively forage out in the open in the water for about a month until they are around 3 – 4 cm long. These young 'fry' can be seen in spring and early summer.  They look like small dark whitebait.

The KCC members also saw birds in the captive breeding programme and learned about using a spotter scope when watching birds on the lakes.

They had great fun spreading mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs at the wetland.
