Some cool Kiri kiwi and Willie weka stories were amongst a letter sent to KCC from Otis Burrell-Ellery, Elizabeth Bailey, Hazel Rae, Aimee Robinson and Emerson Swanson-Dobbs. Check out Elizabeth's story below.
Kiri and Willie are Biologists
“Mmm, tasty caterpillars,” exclaimed Willie weka, caterpillar blood dripping off his beak. “That’s the sixth one today.”
“Hey, look. There’s a trail of caterpillars and worms,” said Kiri kiwi.
“They might be migrating for winter,” Willie said.
Kiri replied, “No, caterpillars don’t migrate.”
“Let’s go and see where they go,” said Willie, starting off down the track. Moments later the trail ended.
“What happened?” asked Kiri.
“I don’t know,” Willie replied, “but I do know I’m hungry.” He started eating caterpillars.
“I guess we could have a few…” said Kiri but before she could finish, a metal cage fell down over her and Willie.
“Oh, no!” Willie screamed. “It’s a trap!”
“I think we are about to become part of a biology experiment,” exclaimed Kiri.
“What’s biology?” asked Willie.
“Biology is the science of living things,” Kiri replied.
A while later…
A man with a clipboard and a white coat sat in front of the glass box that Kiri and Willie had been transported to a moment before.
“Why is he staring at us?” asked Willie.
“Because he wants to know what we do in an enclosed space,” Kiri said. “Look. There are air holes in the box. If we poke our beaks in them and then open wide, we can break the cage and get out.”
“But where are we?” asked Willie.
“I figure they wouldn’t take us far from home,” Kiri replied.
“Shall we do it now?”
“Wait ‘til he’s not looking.”
2 hours later, back at home…
“I can’t believe that worked,” gasped Willie, still out of breath.
“It’s mission accomplished for our little gang,” said Kiri.
