The nasty greenhouse gas methane is being captured from landfills and it’s being used to drive Auckland trucks!
When food decays it releases methane and carbon dioxide into the air.
The Auckland landfill are capturing these gases and using the gas to help drive their trucks.
Several diesel-powered trucks have been converted so that they can take this new fuel – the landfill hopes to power all their trucks using methane.
After the gases are captured the carbon-dioxide is removed using a scrubbing process that uses water.
Although this is a good use of this nasty greenhouse gas, some of the gases are still released into the air before it can be processed!
One way of preventing these gases entering the air is to collect your food waste and create a compost heap in your back garden.
If the food is properly decomposed it produces much less methane and more carbon dioxide – a much less nasty greenhouse gas.
