A starved, dehydrated kiwi chick – named ‘puddles’- who is one of the victims of Northland’s drought is being helped by Forest & Bird’s Auckland branch.
One of the newly hatched kiwi from the Recovery Centre.
‘Puddles’ was found unconscious in a puddle on a track in Trounson Park.
In the past few months, it hasn’t rained much in Northland, so kiwi are finding it hard to find water and food.
Normally, they’re never seen out in the daytime, but kiwi have been spotted in broad daylight in Northland recently in search of food.
Puddles is doing well – however if they sent him back to the bush, he wouldn’t be strong enough to fight off predators, like stoats.
He is with four other kiwi chicks who have also been brought into the Centre for the same reason. He will be sent back to his forest home once he's strong enough to defend himself.
If you would like to see puddles on the centre’s webcam (Feb 20th)– see here –
