How do you make bird food?

Asks Robyn.

Chaffinches, goldfinches and sparrows have stout beaks and eat seeds. Silvereyes, tui and bellbirds have pointy beaks and like fruit and nectar. They all like fat, especially in winter, because it gives them energy.

You can make bird food by mixing bird seed with melted dripping or lard. Even easier is to put out food scraps like half an apple or a grapefruit, a strip of fat or a crust of bread.

But don’t forget the cats! You need to put the food up high so the birds will be safe. You can make a bird table on a fence or a tree branch or just bang in some long nails to spike the food.
