The story of King Canute

In 1016 the Danish King Canute became king of England. A powerful and clever leader, he won many battles and drew up laws protecting his subjects. The following story about Canute has become a legend.

Canute's subjects flattered him. They said he was all-powerful, and there was nothing he could not do. So Canute ordered that his chair be placed at the water's edge and he sat down and commanded the waves to go back.

Of course, as the tide came in, Canute's chair was surrounded by water! He turned to his followers and said, "See, I cannot turn back the waves. There are some things even a king cannot do."

Remember Canute when you are planning your class trip to the beach!
