Forest-friendly Code

'Take only inspiration, leave only footprints'

(Of course inspiration can include notes and drawings, but don't encourage children to collect plants, leaves or insects. Not only is this illegal in reserves but it runs counter to encouraging non-destructive behaviour and conservation awareness in your pupils.)

  • Stay on the track. Don't trample the undergrowth
  • Stay together

Things to take for a day trip in summer:

  • Strong footwear
  • Jersey and raincoat
  • Sun hat
  • Lunch and water/ drink bottle
  • Pencil and sturdy notebook
  • Simple reference books (for teacher), see list below.

Resource List

For a selection of quality reference books look for Andrew Crowe titles. He has published a range of books made specifically to take into the forest.

  • There are "Mini Guides" (pocket size) - Guides to 'Native Ferns', 'Native Forest Shrubs, Climbers and Flowers', 'Coastal Plants' and 'Native Trees'.
  • The "Which" Series - Which 'Native Forest Plant', 'Native Tree', 'Native Fern'.
  • "Life-size Guides" The books are A4 size but the pictures really are life-size - 'Life-size Guide to Insects' and 'Life-size Guide to Native Trees'.
  • And the "Nature Flip Guides". They are plastic coated and fold out like maps - 'Insects' and 'Native Trees'.

All these Andrew Crowe books are published by Penguin. Available from good book stores.
