New Zealand Pest Poem Based on the Feral Cat.

Feral cats rome the bush, when they walk their tail goes swoosh.
They kill our native birds, they are not nice, too mean for words.
They weren't here but they are now,
so we have to get them out of our bush somehow!

By Roald Bomans, 8yrs. July 2003

Kiwi

Ngamatea School pupils get to see the kiwi up close

Getting the kiwi ready for release

Kiwi Release Report

On Friday the 30th of March Ngamatea School went into the bush near Karoi Lake to see three kiwi getting released.

Georgia Donald and Desiree Hannan interviewed Kerry Oakes with some questions. Georgia Donald found out that there are six kinds of kiwi in New Zealand. There are three best ones. The best one is the little spotted kiwi. The great spotted kiwi and the north island brown kiwi could fly along time ago but there wings started to shrink. Kiwi can jump very high and have a very good sense of smell.

The students watched Kerry Oakes gently lift the kiwi out of a box to put the transmitter on the kiwi leg. On the way back there was a small stream with a log going across it and Desiree Hannan fell in.

The students really liked being part of the Kiwi release programme.

Logan and his dad, visiting Te Urewera National Park To KCC,
My name is Logan and I am seven.
My sister and I collect your magazines and they have lots of cool stuff in them.
We went on a Forest and Bird camp in Te Urewera Park. We stayed at the Lions Hut. We went on a walk at night to see the eel in a river. We went on a big walk and came home wet because my shoes got wet in a stream. We had a good dinner.
Here is a photo of my dad and me on the fence outside the Lions Hut.
From Logan Munro.

Annie McDougall wants to help clean up the world. Read her letter to learn about her concerns.
A close-up of Annie's picture Dear KCC,

I love nature and animals. But there's an obvious problem: pollution.
I can't bear to think that innocent sea creatures are dying just because some stupid people are to lazy to put their rubbish in the bin.
I can't help feeling that I should do something about this but I'm just a 10 year old girl. It would be easier to help if I was an adult. But thousands of animals would be dying while I grow up.
For the meantime I guess I can just not litter myself and pick up any rubbish I see on the street, but it doesn't quite seem enough. I wish there was a way I could do more. Do you know a way I could really help?

Thanks for your time.
Annie McDougall

PS. I hope you like the drawing I did for contributors corner. [We love it! Thanks Annie.]

Help Annie to stop animals dying from eating rubbish.

Always put your rubbish in the bin and keep New Zealand's towns, cities, forests, streams and beaches clean.

Taranaki Falls - By Canan Catchpole

I went to the Taranaki Falls one day
I saw Tussock grasses on the way
When I got there, I saw a lava flow
That happened some years ago

The falls were fast, the stream was slow
It really was a magnificent show
We saw M.T Ruapehu and M.T Ngaurahoe
The peaks of the Mountains were very snowy

In the bush there were Beech trees everywhere
We saw a fantail darting through the air
It had pretty colours brown, white & grey
It was beautiful to see the fantail stay

I made up this poem heading back on our way
It was a nice walk on a fine bright day
And now at the end I would just like to state
That the bush walk was fun and really great.

Connor Longmire, age 4, wants to help save native birds from enemies like stoats and rats - I know this because he sent this letter...

Dear KCC
My mum is writing this letter for me because I am only 4 years old.
My name is Connor Longmire and I have got a plan to stop the weasels, stoats, ferrets, rats and mice from eating the native bird chicks and eggs.
I am going to do a deal with them - if they all agree to stop eating the chicks and eggs, then I will give them chocolate, chips and lollipops!
I hope that this will help to save all the native birds.
I have drawn a picture for you of all the birds being safe.
From Connor Longmire.
