The map below shows the Special Takahe Area and some of the mountain ranges within
Fiordland National Park. It is in the South Island of New Zealand at the bottom,
left-hand side.
Takahe Stream runs into Lake Orbell,
which is in Takahe Valley.
Where can you see
takahe?
Small numbers of
takahe are held for public display at the Wildlife Centre (Te Anau) and at the National
Wildlife Centre (Mount Bruce, near Masterton).
Four offshore islands are also home to takahe:
1. Maud Island, Marlborough Sounds
2. Mana Island, west coast north of Wellington
3. Kapiti Island, north of Mana, Kapiti Coast
4. Tiritiri Matangi Island, Hauraki Gulf
