Department of Conservation staff have been working very hard to
learn more about the kiwi.
The Kiwi Recovery Trust (which used to be the Kiwi Recovery programme)
has helped DOC staff learn how many types of kiwi there are and
where kiwi are living in the wild.
DOC scientists have found that there are six varieties of kiwi,
which are located on the map below. However, they are still making
new discoveries and this may change.
DOC scientists use the word 'varieties' rather than 'species' because
they have not finished their research. Through genetic testing and
blood typing they might still discover that there are more 'varieties'
of kiwi than they thought. When they have finished their research
the scientists will be able to confirm how many 'species' of kiwi
live in New Zealand.
The
kiwi is endemic to New Zealand.
This map shows where kiwi are living in the wild.
There are six varieties of kiwi:
North Island Brown
Little Spotted
Great Spotted
Okarito Brown
Haast Tokoeka
Southern Tokoeka
This map is from an article about the kiwi in the Forest and Bird
magazine, May 1999.
